Select Branch:

Skilled migration in Australia refers to the immigration program designed to attract individuals with specific skills and qualifications that are in demand in the Australian labor market. The Australian government uses the skilled migration program as a way to address skill shortages and contribute to the country’s economic development.

There are several visa subclasses under the skilled migration program, but one of the primary ones is the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program. As of my knowledge cutoff in January 2022, the main visas within the GSM program include:

  1. 1. Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) – Points-tested stream
  2. 2. Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
  3. 3. Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) – Graduate Work
  4. 4. Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489)
  5. 5. Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)

1.Skilled Independent
Visa (Subclass 189)

The Subclass 189 visa is designed for skilled workers who possess the qualifications and experience needed in the Australian labor market. What sets it apart is the Points-Tested Stream, where candidates accumulate points based on factors such as age, education, English proficiency, work experience, and more. You can refer to your criteria here : https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/skilled-independent-189/points-table and calculate points here: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/tools/points-calculator With this visa, you have the ability to:

  • Reside permanently in Australia.
  • Work and pursue studies within Australia.
  • Enroll in Australia’s public health care scheme, Medicare.
  • Sponsor your relatives to join you in Australia.
  • Travel to and from Australia for a period of five years.
  • If eligible, apply for Australian citizenship.
  • Newly arrived residents may experience a waiting period before gaining access to specific Australian Government payments and benefits.

► Duration of Stay:

This visa is permanent, allowing an indefinite stay in Australia. The visa includes a travel component that remains valid for five years from the date of visa grant. Permanent residency status is granted on the day the visa is issued, whether the applicant is in Australia at the time of the grant or enters Australia on the visa from overseas.

► Including Family:

You have the option to include family members in your application. You can include them during the initial visa application or add them after the application is lodged but before a decision is made on the visa. Family members applying for the visa must meet health and character requirements. If your partner or dependent children are not included, provide a reason, such as their existing Australian citizenship or permanent residency.

► Cost:

The visa fee for the main applicant is AUD4,640.00. Additional charges apply for each family member included in the application. The Visa Pricing Estimator can help determine the total cost of your visa. An additional charge may be applicable for applicants 18 years or older with less than functional English, referred to as the second instalment. This charge is only requested if the visa is to be granted. The second instalment charge for family members is AUD4,885.00. The Visa Pricing Estimator does not include the second instalment or other costs, which may include expenses for health checks, police certificates, and biometrics.

► Application Location:

You can apply for the visa from within or outside Australia. However, the application should not be made while in immigration clearance. If applying in Australia, a substantive visa or specific Bridging visa is necessary for the application to be valid.

► Processing Time:

For an estimate of processing times, refer to the visa processing time guide tool. Actual processing times vary based on individual circumstances, including the completeness of the application, prompt responses to requests for additional information, checks on supporting information, and external agency responses.

► Travel:

You can freely travel to and from Australia as many times as desired within the first five years from the visa grant date. After five years, a Resident Return (RRV) visa (subclass 155 or 157) is required for re-entry as a permanent resident. Your visa will be digitally linked to your passport; there won’t be a physical label in your passport.
