The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the most prominent English language proficiency test worldwide. The International Development Program of Australian Universities and Colleges, The British Council, and Cambridge English Language Assessment were the creators and administrators of early IELTS. Today IELTS is the basic criteria to fulfill for higher education and global migration.

Governments in Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Canada use IELTS to process immigration applications.

IELTS test format

There are two types of IELTS tests that you can take.

IELTS Academics

IELTS General Training

Both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests are graded in exactly the same way.

The first part of the test: Listening

The IELTS Listening test examines your skills on the following matters :

  • Your ability to comprehend general ideas and precise factual information

  • Your ability to recognize the intentions, attitudes, and thoughts of a narrator

  • Your capability to follow the building of an argument

Number of questions: 40

Grading: 40

Timing: 30 minutes to listen and 10 minutes to write down answers from question booklet to answer sheet.

Within 30 minutes, you will hear four recordings in a different contexts.

Recording 1: A conversation on day-to-day life social context between two people. For example, a telephonic conversation between a client and a shipping agent.

Recording 2: A monologue set in an everyday social context. For example, a speech on how Mirai Global provides the best visa counseling services.

Recording 3: A group of people(maximum 4) converse in an educational or training context. For example, a conversation between a tutor and his two students.

Recording 4: A monologue on an academic subject, For example. a class lecture on cultural shocks in the process of migration.

The second part of the test: Reading

The IELTS Reading test examines your skills on the following matters :

  • Your ability to read for general ideas, main idealis, and detailed information

  • Your ability to recognize the intentions, attitudes, and thoughts of a narrator

  • Your capability to follow the building of an argument

  • Your grasp on explicit and implicit layers of information

Number of questions: 40

Grading: 40

Timing: 60 minutes for each Academic Reading and General Training Reading.

Academic Reading

IELTS Academic Writing test is written in a formal style. You will be given with two tasks in this portion. In Task 1 you will have to describe the given graph, diagram, chart or table in at least 150 words. In Task 2 you will have to write an essay in response to a statement or premise. First present one view, then present the other view, and finally present your opinion in atleast 250 words.

Grading:Your answer will be marked by a certificated IELTS examiner.

Timing:60 minutes to complete both Task 1 and Task 2.

General Training Reading

IELTS General Training Writing test, as its name suggests, is of general issues and interest. You will be given two tasks in this portion. In Task 1 you will have to write a letter of application in at least 150 words. The aim of such letters is to either request information or explain the situation in three formats: formal, sem-formal, and personal. In Task 2 you will have to write an essay of at least 250 words on certain views or status quo. Examiner will evaluate if you justify your pinion, provide evidence or arguments, among many other criterias.

Number of questions: 2

Grading: Your answer will be marked by a certificated IELTS examiner.

Timing: 60 minutes to complete both Task 1 and Task 2.

The fourth part of the test: Speaking

IELTS Speaking test is interactive and similar to daily life situations. Don’t worry much about your accent, not everyone has Received Pronunciation. Different accents may be used.

A certified examiner will speak to you in IELTS Speaking test, and the test shall be recorded.

Both the IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests have the same content for the Speaking test.

The IELTS Speaking test examines your skills on the following matters :

  • Articulate information and ideas on a daily basis
  • Speak on a particular topic in a detailed manner using suitable language
  • Communicate and justify your stands

Grading: You will be assessed on the four criteria: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation, by certificated IELTS examiners.

Timing: 11-14 minutes

Part 1:
Introduction of the examiner

Introduction of the examinee and confirmation of your identity

General questions on easy topics. For example, house, family, work, hobbies, and studies.

Part 2:

You will be given a task card that includes the topic to talk about along with several points jotted down.

You will be given one minute to prepare and make notes.

Then you will have to talk continuously for one to two minutes on the subject.

The examiner will then have one or two follow-up questions.

Part 3:

You will be asked more questions on the same topic presented in part 2. Make sure to use this chance to show your speaking skills in abstract issues.
